M1 INSTANT Project – Fingal to Border

In July 2005 the Elmore Group were awarded the contract for the M1 Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Implementation (INSTANT) Project by the National Roads Authority. This project included the supply, installation, testing and commissioning of ITS equipment at various locations along the M1 Motorway between Dublin Airport (J2) and the Northern Ireland border, a total of 90 km in length.

Included in this project was the design, supply, installation, commissioning of a turnkey system which feeds data into the NRA ATMS database including:

Journey Time System
VMS
Vehicle detection and classification
CCTV
Communications

The various elements of this project contained the following:

• Variable Message Signs
• Canteliver structures to carry the VMS signs
• Automatic Number Plate Recognition System
• ANPR instation hardware and software
• CCTV Cameras and hogh mast poles
• Vehicle detection and classification complete with loop detectors
• ATMS and NRA Traffic Database interfaces
• 15km of Fibre Optic cable
• Wireless Communications
• Ethernet Backbone
• All Civil Works: ducting, foundations, Roadside barrier, landscaping
• All traffic management and helath & Safety requirement including the role of PSCS
   

The ultimate result of this project is the provision of journey time information through the use of ANPR camera installations, the passing of information to motorists through VMS signs and the gathering of data on road usage through vehicle detection and classification.
